CHAPTER THIRTEEN

I slipped out of the bed, carefully placing a pillow under Nanami’s arm so she wouldn’t wake. She had no trouble sleeping late here, and I didn’t want to disturb her peace. The clock on the bedside table said it was only five twenty in the morning, so I should be the only one awake. I can come back and change out of these soft shorts and tank top before any one wakes up. With that confidence, I padded my way down the stairs.

I heard the heartbeat before I got to the bottom, but she was already sitting up so it was too late to turn back. I could tell it was Amaya from the smell of sage, ash, and parsley. Though there was a new strange smell that clouded around her. “Amaya? What are you doing down here? What is that smell?”

“Losing faith.” She sighed. “I’ve been doing spells. It’s probably ash from the candles.”

“No,” I sat down beside her. “Ash is normal for you. It’s a new one.”

She held up a jar of green... something. “Is it this?” I sniffed cautiously. That was it. I nodded, putting the jar back on the coffee table. “Damiana. I was desperate. Not that it matters.”

“Okay? So, what happened?” It is too much for this early in the day. I don’t have the mind power to guess things right now.

“I told Aspen about those people we met at the store, and everything they said. She’s pissed. So pissed, in fact, that I slept on the couch. Well, I laid on the couch and tried to sleep, but failed. You know, I can’t remember the last time I slept alone?”

“Are you going to be okay?” I don’t know what I am supposed to do in this situation. This is alarmingly close to friendship territory. Something that is completely uncharted for me.

“I don’t know.” She sighed.

“Oh! I know what’ll work.” She looked at me curiously. I pulled her off the couch, and dragged her with me up the stairs. She let me drag her into my room, still quiet. I gently pried the pillow from Nanami, and waved Amaya over.

“I don’t think...”

“Trust me.” She sighed, but slid into the bed and into Nanami’s embrace.

“Oh my god. She smells like cotton candy.” I don’t know what cotton candy is, but Nanami does have a very sweet smell. I still think it’s from her blood. I don’t know if witches can smell blood, but what do I know? Nanami snuggled closer to Amaya, burying her head into Amaya’s shoulder. “Okay. I feel a little better. Get in here.” I rolled my eyes, but got into the bed beside her. She slung her other arm around me, pulling me closer. “You smell good too. Like metallics and old books.”

“Thanks? I think.” The witch was much warmer than Nanami. It felt like I was laying beside a fireplace instead of a person. Her warmth was oddly comforting, and easily lulled me back to sleep.
